Updated: 4 days ago

This is a story about a successful case of Dry Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)—meet Colby.

Case Profile

Colby is a 1.5-year-old neutered male cat, adopted three months ago. A few days prior to his visit, he became lethargic and stopped eating. Upon examination, we found his mandibular (under-the-jaw) lymph nodes were markedly enlarged, and he had a fever. We immediately performed bloodwork and a fine-needle aspirate of the swollen lymph node.

Diagnostic Findings

  • Bloodwork: Showed mild anemia and a mild increase in white blood cells, with all other organ functions and protein levels within normal limits.

  • Abdominal Ultrasound: No fluid accumulation was found, but several abdominal lymph nodes were abnormally enlarged.

  • Cytology: Analysis of the jaw lymph nodes indicated inflammation, ruling out lymphoma.

Given these findings, the most likely diagnosis was Dry FIP. After discussing the options with Colby’s owner, we decided to begin treatment with an anti-FIP antiviral.

Treatment & Recovery

Colby’s response was rapid. Within 2–3 days of treatment, his appetite returned, and his energy levels were back to normal. At his two-week recheck, the anemia had fully resolved, and all enlarged lymph nodes had returned to normal size.

Veterinary Insight: The Challenge of FIP

Diagnosing FIP can be complex, and definitive confirmation isn't always possible. However, by assessing the animal’s age, clinical signs, and test results, we can often strongly suspect the condition. When FIP is highly suspected, initiating effective antiviral therapy usually leads to noticeable improvement within just 24–48 hours.

We currently utilize a premium antiviral medication imported from the UK for FIP treatment. If you suspect your cat may be suffering from similar symptoms, please do not hesitate to reach out.
